Karma basically shows how much other members like you. You see, if you are nice to other members or do a favor for them, they often thank you by giving you Karma. If you are mean to other members, they smite you.
Follow the examples below-
Let's just say you know another member with 0 Karma. Let's name them.. Frank. If you look in the avatar section of their profile, you'll see the word Karma toward the bottom. Under their Karma you'll see two words, exalt and smite. It looks something like this-
Karma: 0
[exalt l smite]
Now let's say that Frank made an avatar for you, and a lot of work went into it. Since this is a nice thing to do, you would probably give them Karma. To raise their Karma, you would click Exalt. Then when you look at their Karma, it will look like this-
Karma: 1
Now the exalt and smite buttons will disappear. Don't worry, this only happens so you don't continuously smite or exalt someone. In hour, the buttons will reappear and Frank's Karma will look like this. [note: the exalt and smite disappear only for you, other members can still give / take Karma from Frank].
[exalt l smite]
Let's say the next day Frank cursed at you. Not only is that mean, but it's against the rules. Now you would probably smite him. If other people saw Frank curse at you [let's just say they did] they might smite him too. If five people smite Frank, his karma will look like this-
Karma: -4
If your Karma is in the negatives, that means that either your being mean to other members or you broke a rule [being disrespectful is breaking a rule by the way]. Now that Frank has negative 4 Karma, people know Frank might of been a jerk-face. ;D
Having -4 Karma isn't that bad. If you have extremely low Karma [like -28] other members will probably avoid you. If you have very high karma [like 33] then other members might want to talk to you more often. Whether you get more friends or not, Karma is a great way of showing how nice a member is.
[note: You shouldn't ask members to help you just for Karma
ex: Can someone help me make a cool vampire avatar, if you help I'll give you +5 Karma.
If someone helps you just to be nice, then you should give them Karma. It shouldn't be used as a bribe.]
